No longer will you or your patrons have to
locate and search through stacks and stacks of frequently un-indexed volumes
for information on Iowa and Iowa in the Civil War! A new Iowa History reference
product is now available! A first-of-its kind searchable CD-ROM disk has
been produced that contains many hard-to-access books and more than 50,000
pages of Iowa history of interest to genealogists, students, scholars, Civil
War buffs and the general public. All of this in a form that will take up
far less space than even one journal and runs on Mac or Windows! The materials
contained in the disk are generally agreed to be the most usable yet least
accessible to people from all backgrounds. The disk encompasses all issues
of The Palimpsest (1920-1965),
the full text of 15 booklets, two books and 120 Des Moines
Register Articles on the history of Iowa, a list of the counties of origin
for all the Iowa Civil War regiments, 20 previously unpublished Civil War
Diaries and Documents, three 19th century books on the history of Iowa's
participation in the Civil War complete with comprehensive histories of each
regiment as well as 4 more books on Iowa and the Civil War. If they were
all available, a collection of these materials would cost well over $1000
in paper form. All the above can be accessed and printed either in its entirety,
by page, or by volume. However, what makes this disk unique is that comprehensive
and pinpoint information searches can be done in a matter of minutes using
key words, phrases and Boolean logic. The searching is so simple that a patron
can master the technique quickly and easily. Using this technique, precise
information can be gathered and delivered in a fraction of the time it would
take to locate it in the conventional way. This one-of-a-kind disk was developed
by O. J. Fargo, of Creston, Iowa, and is available from the Camp Pope
Bookshop for only $29.95 plus $4 shipping and handling per disk (Iowa residents
add $1.50 sales tax). Future searchable and printable CD publications
planned include such hard-to-find resources as the Roster and Record of
Iowa Soldiers in the War of the Rebellion (a comprehensive listing with
biographies of all the Iowa Civil War troops complete with place of birth
and other information), The Annals of Iowa (inception to 1965), Iowa
Historical Record, Iowa Journal of History and Politics, as well as dozens
of other very valuable but out-of-print reference publications pertaining
to Iowa history and Iowa in the Civil War.
Here's a partial listing of the publications
included in the disk: The Palimpsest 1920-1965; O.J. Fargo's True
Tales from Iowa's Past, History of Iowa, The Common Soldier of the Civil
War, and several booklets on Iowa history; L. D. Ingersoll's Iowa
and the Rebellion (1866, a comprehensive history of Iowa Regiments),
S. H. M. Byers's Iowa in War Times (1876, probably the best single
study of Iowa and the Civil War and a very sought-after book!) ; Volume 2
of B. F. Gue's History of Iowa (which contains a regiment by regiment
history of Iowa's role in the Civil War) ; Edna McElroy's Undying
Loyalty; Series of 20 original Civil War Diaries and Documents
on Iowa in the Civil War Military including the full text of B. F. Booth's
Dark Days of the Rebellion; and Scott's Military Handbook
Handbook.
Sorry, Vol. 1 is no longer available. But most of what was on Vol. 1 is available on Vol. 3. See below.
Also Available Iowa History Treasures From the Archives, Volume 2
This CD contains even more resources for Iowa history than Volume 1, which concentrated mostly on Iowa and the Civil War. Included are all issues of every State Historical Society journal, up to 1965. That's 330 issues of the ANNALS OF IOWA (1863 to 1965), 72 issues of the IOWA HISTORICAL RECORD (1885-1902), 232 issues of THE IOWA JOURNAL OF HISTORY AND POLITICS (1903-1961), 540 issues of THE PALIMPSEST (1920-1965), plus 43 separate books on Iowa history ranging from the GLIMPSE OF IOWA IN 1846 to TRUE TALES FROM IOWA'S PAST, a series of nearly 150 articles by Herb Moeller that ran in the Des Moines Register in the 1930s, plus much much more. Runs on both Mac and PC platforms using the searchable Adobe pdf format.

This newest addition to the Iowa History CD-ROM series contains much of the material contained on Volume 1, with the addition of Stuart's Iowa Colonels and Regiments. Historical Society journal articles on the Civil War are all here, but organized differently, year by year and according to subject. The most exciting aspect of this CD-ROM is the publication of the Roster and Record. Not only are all 6 volumes of the Roster here, but the disk contains a database/index of all 74201 Iowa soldiers listed in the Roster. This is searchable using a program incorporated on the disk. The rest of the disk is readable using Abode Acrobat Reader (a copy of which is on the disk if you don't already have it). Well worth the price if you are doing research on Iowa in the Civil War.
